As of Spring 2007, the Department of Veterans Affairs was caring for an estimated 1,600 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with traumatic brain injuries and other severe wounds. The care they received was often inadequate, as the scale and severity of their injuries exceeded available resources and medical expertise.
